“When you fast…” Matthew 6:16
In his book Shaping History through Prayer and Fasting, Derek Prince relates how God prompted him to organize a day of prayer and fasting in England after World War II. He had heard of Joseph Stalin’s plan to purge Russia by killing thousands of Jews. Many people in England joined Prince on a particular Thursday by praying for God to stop the plan to kill Jews. Two weeks later, to the day, God stopped the planned killings. Stalin had a heart attack and died.
As I travel around the country speaking on spiritual disciplines, I find very few Christians who fast, let alone who fast on a regular basis. I believe that many Christians live in ignorance about fasting, its purpose, and its benefits, both spiritually and physically. A journey toward passion for God will lead us into the spiritual discipline of regular fasting.

Note from editor: It was not intentional on my part that the subject of fasting (written by the same author but from different resources) “happened” to fall on two sequential days. I can only assume that this is by God’s design, and that perhaps He wants us to pay close attention to what He wants to say to us!
Father, You are so creative when You speak, and I am in awe that You are showing me an important discipline that I often neglect. Wake me from my slumber and lift me out of my ignorance so that I am able to tap into this powerful source of Your spiritual strength. Because You love me, I know that You will use even my most feeble effort to fast to show me more of who You are.
Praise Jesus for being “the same yesterday and today and forever” (Heb. 13:8). Thank him for always being with you regardless of your circumstances. Confess your weakness and inability to escape certain temptations. Commit your way to the Lord’s total control. Ask for his help today to overcome sin in your life.
Pray that believers will be strengthened to recognize God’s voice and reject the enemy’s lies and tricks “in order that Satan may not outwit us” (2 Cor. 2:11).
