The Power and Presence of God

May devotions picture“O righteous Father, although the world has not known You, yet I have known You; and these have known that You sent Me; and I have made Your name known to them, and will make it known, so that the love with which You have loved Me may be in them, and I in them” (John 17:25-26, NASB).

Here, the intimate caring of the Father and the Son toward each other is extended to the disciples through the name. It is through that name that the love of the Father is revealed within the believer, and it is through that name that Christ Himself will dwell in them.

The name, in Scripture then, is the very character and nature of God Himself. The name contains the power of God as well as the presence of God. The two are inextricably woven together, and cannot be separated. The name has been described as the “power-sphere” of God’s very essence and being. Though it is unwieldy, perhaps a more accurate phrase would be the “power/presence sphere.”

Lord Jesus, Your Name is holy and mighty in the earth!  All of the power and presence of God are held within Your Name so that through prayer, I might be privileged to release it into lives, situations and nations!  For this I am wholly grateful!

Prayer Points

Glorify God as the Lord who gathers his people from east and west, from north and south, to worship and serve him (Isa. 66:18-21). Thank God for including you as part of this family of varied cultures, races, and languages. Confess any tendency you have to put blinders on, so that you see God as interested only in one people or culture. Commit yourself to studying more about God’s work in countries and cultures other than your own. Ask God to give you an opportunity to become involved in that work in some way— by prayer support, financial giving, letter writing, etc.

Pray that God’s Spirit will help your church to move beyond its comfort zone in reaching out to those who are “unfamiliar”—of a different race, creed, or language. Ask God to give you plenty of opportunities to do so.
