A Renewed Challenge to Pray for America: Where the Spirit of the Lord Is

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom” (2 Cor. 3:17).

In so many ways, the great crisis of our nation is the loss of freedom. The Pilgrims who first came to this country braved great difficulties because the government of England was not allowing them to worship as they believed was right. If Pilgrims were living today, they would be appalled at how that freedom has been eroded through the years.

It is not just religious liberty we are speaking of, though that is the one that strikes most closely to home as we consider our need for revival. Other examples include unfair taxation, regulations in every area of life, and, especially dangerous, the stifling of free speech through an increasing pressure to conform to “politically correct” forms of thought and speech. In the name of “tolerance,” an intolerant culture is taking away our hard-earned freedoms.

A rebirth of freedom in our land opens the door for the Church to cry out to God for His glory to come. Yes, that most certainly can still happen in the midst of oppression, but I believe the blessings of God can impact an entire nation that allows for the freedom to seek the Lord. One of the most important prayers you can pray is for a restoration of freedom.

Here are some Scriptures to inform your prayers for freedom:

2 Cor. 3:17 – “Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.”

Gal. 5:1 – “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.”

Gal. 5:13 – “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.”

1 Pet. 2:16 – “Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God’s slaves.”

Holy Spirit, guide us into the freedom that we have been set free to enjoy. Guard our hearts from fearfulness so that we will not allow our freedoms to be stolen from us. May Your Church stand firm, using our freedom to serve one another humbly in love.

Prayer Points

Praise God for meeting with his people in special ways through weekly worship services. Give thanks that you can continue to be with him today! Confess times of ignoring God during the weekdays. Commit yourself to a special time of worshiping God through personal devotions each day this week. Ask the Lord to remind you of his presence throughout this day.

Pray that unsaved persons around the world will see that brilliant witness of Christian leaders and glorify God. Ask God to shine clearly and consistently through you in your sphere of influence.
