In the Midst of God’s Calling

We can receive power against temptation by praying as Jesus taught us. Perhaps this seems obvious, but in being led by the Lord in a fallen world and confronted with temptation, we can find release from the trouble or trial by asking God to save us from it. Asking for release from temptation, or for power to overcome it, however, must not be cavalier or flippant. Rather, the asking for release is intense and profound. It assumes a battle posture and a fight just before us. It assumes we are in the midst of God’s calling to reclaim earth for Christ, who will in turn give it back to God the Father.

There is one aspect related to the prayer in Gesthemane that bears examination: Jesus saw the human weakness of His three closest friends on earth—Peter and James and John. He saw the weakness, He knew that there was trouble coming upon them, and He longed to give them direction and help to overcome.

His longing for human companionship in a time of intense sorrow was profound. He asked them to “watch” with Him—to pray with Him—or at least to remain beside Him. My hunch is that something more was happening. He wanted to teach them the way through the trial. Surely it is clear that He was praying, and He didn’t want to pray alone. Yet it is striking to notice that even in this extreme situation, Jesus attempted to teach them what they needed to be doing. To the last, He was a masterful teacher, even at His darkest hour.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy upon me! Lead me through my temptations by giving me the power to withstand them! Help me to learn how to watch and pray in the midst of my darkest hours, knowing that You are near and that You will walk through difficult times with me. Lord, teach me to pray so that I may be an overcomer, filled with the power of the Spirit to do Your will in every situation and circumstance.

 Prayer Points

Praise your Father for his perfect will (Mt. 6:10). Give thanks that nothing occurs in life that God does not cause to happen. Confess those times when you’ve doubted that his will was best for you. Commit yourself to living by Ps. 40:8: “I desire to do your will, O my God.” Ask that God’s perfect will may be accomplished in your life.

Take a global perspective. Pray for God’s will to be done on earth even as it is in heaven. Ask that Satan’s dark dominion will be exposed by the pure light of the gospel.
