Prayer as Union with the Father

Jesus did not simply pray often. He did not only pray regularly. And He did not just pray much. His was a life of constant, continuous, conscious communion with His Father. A life of passion for the Father expressed most clearly in a life of prayer. This is evident not only in the above examples of His praying, but more so in His own statements regarding this abiding life.

He spoke of His:

1) Conscious awareness of what the Father is doing—Jn. 5:19-20.

2) Constant hearing of the Father’s voice—8:28.

3) Consistent experience of the Father’s presence—8:29.

We are invited to follow Him into this life (10:10; 14:6). We can abide in His love, just as He abides in His Father’s love (15:10). We are in union with Him just as He is in union with the Father (14:20). We can hear His voice just as He heard His Father’s (10:16). This unceasing passionate prayer, this timeless Trinitarian dance extends into eternity past and eternity future. The writer of Hebrews gives us the pre-incarnation description, “Therefore, when He came into the world, He said, ‘Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, But a body You have prepared for Me’” (Heb. 10:5).

During His incarnation Jesus “offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and He was heard because of His godly fear” (5:7-8). Finally, we see that the passionate prayer of Jesus extends for all of eternity as “He always lives to make intercession” (7:25). Herein lies the most important fact of all concerning prayer: Jesus is praying for us. To pray is to join Him in His praying. To pray is to connect with His passion that has and will burn for all eternity.

Father, You desire for my life to be an unending prayer, just as Jesus’ life was one of continual communion with You.  Help me to always be aware of Your presence as I listen for Your voice.  Please give me consistent awareness of all that You are doing around me so that I might join You wherever You are at work!  May I never forget that to pray is to be connected to the passionate intercession of Jesus Christ.  This knowledge alone should fuel my desire to pray without ceasing.  Thank You Father, for the amazing privilege of prayer.

Prayer Points

Praise God for his faithfulness in calling you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 1:9). Thank God for the privilege of being his adopted child. Confess those times when you’ve foolishly acted like an orphan rather than as one of God’s own children. Commit yourself to strengthening the fellowship you enjoy with Christ and with other Christians. Ask God to reveal to you anything that might hinder your fellowship with Christ.

Pray for a close and loving bond to grow between the members of your immediate family. Ask that this bond will be rooted only in Christ Jesus.
