Devotions for Every Day Life

The Spirit’s Intercession

Easter crossesAnswered prayer is inseparable from the Word of God and worship. God communicates as we meditate in His Word and receive the wisdom and spiritual understanding given by the Holy Spirit (Jn. 16:13-15; Col. 1:9-10). We learn His mind and heart and therefore build a genuine relationship with Him. In observing this, we grow more in believing prayer and pray less default prayers tagged with “if it be Your will” as a convenient out. Scripture becomes the framework for expressing the cries of our heart in petitions and supplications to God (Jn. 15:7-8).

As we continue to meditate in Scripture and persevere in prayer three matters transpire in our prayer life. We begin to stand in awe and take pleasure in His presence as we learn God’s character and ways (Eph. 3:20-21; Rev. 5:12). Jesus’ high priestly ministry and intercession for us becomes a great assurance in our wrestling and burdens (Rom. 8:34; Eph. 6:12-18; Heb. 4:15-16). And the reality of the Spirit’s intercession takes place for us when we do not know what or how to pray—for the Spirit knows what is the mind and will of God and He knows how to intercede for us with unspoken groanings that cannot be uttered (Rom. 8:26-27).

Holy Spirit, there are many times when I have no words for what is upon my heart! How thankful I am to know that You will intercede for me before the Father because You know the depths of my burdens and the longings of my heart. It awes me to know that Jesus is continually interceding for me as I seek to pray the will of the Father, and as I learn His character and His ways, and meditate upon His word, I trust You to align my prayers with His plans and purposes.

 Prayer Points

Praise the Lord, who made and cares for heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them (Ps. 146:1-6). Give thanks for his personal care for you. Confess instances of putting ultimate trust “in mortal men, who cannot save” (146:3). Commit yourself to putting your hope in the Lord your God. Ask God to help you hand your cares to him through daily prayer.

Pray that God will continually prompt his people to join him in caring for those oppressed or otherwise in need (146:7-10). Ask God to grant corporate and individual wisdom, persistence, and love in seeking to extend his kingdom.
