Devotions for Every Day Life

From Head Knowledge to Heart Knowledge

May devotions picture“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe” (Ephesians 1:17-18).

Wisdom signifies both knowledge – knowing things, facts – and good judgment. It is learning more about God and having the discernment to process all that you know of God into Christlike living. Revelation can mean understanding or an ability to hear from God. But praying for “a spirit of wisdom and revelation” implies so much more. It is asking for an attitude of seeking the things of God – and God Himself. The apostle Paul wanted knowledge for the Ephesians, but with a passionate heart as well. “Open the eyes of their hearts,” he prayed. That goes beyond simply believing in something with our heads. That is an ability to see into another dimension with faith and understanding. And that’s an important aspect of a vibrant Christian life.

Many believers struggle to move head knowledge into the heart…into day-to-day living out of one’s faith through the power of God. That is our inheritance on earth – the ability to let the power of Christ flow through us, living His life through us.

Gracious Father, I ask You to give me a much stronger spirit of wisdom and revelation. Reveal Yourself to me in greater and greater ways so that I can see things as You see them – with spiritual eyes.

Prayer Points

Glorify God as the beginning and end of all things, the Alpha and the Omega. Give thanks for his love for you—a love that has kept you in mind since the beginning of the world and will continue to hold you when this world has passed away. Confess those times when you have seen yourself and your needs as the beginning and end of your existence. Commit yourself to giving God the highest place in your life and heart. Ask God to reveal his glory to you so that you cannot help but praise him with your whole heart.

Pray that worship services all over the world will glorify the name and power of Jesus rather than promote lesser things.
