“Then one of the seven angels . . . spoke with me, saying, “Come here, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.” and he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, having the glory of God… I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the almighty and the Lamb are its temple. And the city has no need of the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the Lamb. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it” (Revelation 21:9-11, 22-24).
Here is the glorious and final hope of the New Testament—that we, the people of God, made into a holy unity by the experience of the Holy Spirit, are brought to the place in which we are forever forged into a magnificent unity through which God shines forever.
When we say, “The kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, forever!” we are saying that we are committed to the ultimate ending of all things, in which God becomes the center, and we are in the center with Him, radiating everything that is of Him to all that lives and moves and breathes.
We do that imperfectly now. But God is calling us to be that forever.
Reflect on the reality that we are not just going to a city, but that we are, in some way that cannot be understood with our limited capacity for thought, going to be the very city of God Himself. Reflect on the truth that we are the temple in which God dwells by the Spirit, and that nations will see God’s glory and Jesus’ glory only as God shines through us! Pray for those who need the light of Christ to shine on them, and pray to be one through whom the light shines. End your time by declaring, “yours is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever. Amen!”
Life-Giving Father, trying to imagine the city in which You dwell is far beyond me! Yet, because of Your Spirit, I am Your temple…a dwelling place through which others are able to see the glory of Jesus. May Your light shine through me in ways that allow people who don’t know You to be drawn into Your Presence. Teach me to love others so fully that they are continually attracted to Your grace-filled Son.

Praise God, “the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort” (2 Cor. 1:3). Give thanks for God’s comfort to you and all who truly mourn (Mt. 5:4). Confess any sin he shows you, truly mourning for the pain you have caused. Commit to receiving God’s forgiveness. Ask the Lord to search your heart and thoughts, removing any offensive way and leading you “in the way everlasting” (Ps. 139:23-24).
Pray that the righteousness of Christ will be evidenced to your whole community through your church’s leadership and membership. Ask God to help you keep his kingdom and righteousness your first priority.
