Overcoming Sinful Thoughts

May 2014 devotions picture

Where is the god who can compare with you—
wiping the slate clean of guilt,
Turning a blind eye, a deaf ear,
to the past sins of your purged and precious people?
You don’t nurse your anger and don’t stay angry long,
for mercy is your specialty. That’s what you love most.
And compassion is on its way to us.
    You’ll stamp out our wrongdoing.
You’ll sink our sins
to the bottom of the ocean.  Micah 7:18-19 (MSG)

One of the principle teachings of the Bible is that God has redeemed our fallen race. Adam’s sin meant that there was no part of human life that wasn’t touched by human sin—all parts of our being are tainted with the iniquity of our first parents. But Jesus’ entrance into the human condition as a human being, born of Mary, means that there is no part of human experience that cannot be redeemed. All of God came into all of humanity, and there is no sin so deep that God is not deeper still. Ask God’s Spirit to buy back each sinful inclination. Today, anytime a sinful thought comes to mind, turn back to this prayer, that God would use this sinful attitude, practice, or inclination as a platform for His goodness.

Awesome Redeemer, what an amazing gift You have given to me! You are a grace-filled Father, and my heart is grateful! Draw me so deeply into the awareness of Your presence that sinful thoughts have no opportunity to take root. I ask this in the powerful Name of Jesus, who paid the price for my sin so that I might be free to live a victorious life.

Prayer Points

Praise God for his great love and mercy shown to you (Eph 2:4). Give thanks that nothing can separate you from the love of Jesus (Rom. 8:35). Confess any lack of love which you have shown to God or to another person. Commit yourself to loving God with your whole being (Deut. 6:5). Ask God to prune your life so that the spiritual fruit of love will grow large and appetizing to others.

It was Jesus’ love for sinners that sent him to the cross. Pray for an opportunity to share that kind of sacrificial love with another person (Jn. 15:9).
