Moses said to the Lord, “O Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.” The Lord said to him, “Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” —Exodus 4:10-12
There are lots of reasons why we don’t share our faith with our neighbors. But one of the main reasons is that we are just too afraid. And our fear may come from a notion that sharing our faith puts us in a position of too much responsibility—more than we can handle. We don’t feel capable of helping God bring the miracle of new life. Some of us really believe that it’s up to us alone to bring our neighbors into a personal relationship with God.
As you have prayed for, cared about and felt the urgency of the hour to share the good news of Jesus with your neighbor, always remember who takes the ultimate responsibility for your neighbor’s response. It’s not you. The one responsible for the miracle of new life is God alone. Through his Holy Spirit, God is already at work in the heart of your neighbor. And God is already at work in you. Your job is simply to be available as the voice box for the words the Holy Spirit will give you to speak. You aren’t the one who will change your neighbor’s heart. You aren’t the one who will cause him or her to cross the line from disbelief to belief in Jesus. That’s God’s job. He simply invites you to work alongside him.
Prayer Starters for Praying Exodus 4:10-12
• Praise God by letting him know how thankful you are that he is in control. God is the one who gave you your mouth, your mind, your eyes, your ears. God is the one who has a perfect plan for your life and for the lives of your neighbors.
• Ask God to calm your fears and settle your anxieties about sharing with your neighbor. Ask him to give you the words to speak.
• Thank God that he loves you and your neighbor more than any of us could ever imagine. The Lord’s desire is to share eternity with us. He has done everything necessary to make that possible.

Praise God for his controlling presence everywhere. Give thanks that no circumstance in life—even death itself—is beyond his loving control. Confess your desire to act according to your own timetable rather than God’s. Commit yourself to drawing closer to God in every way and waiting patiently for him. Ask for the ability to live by faith and not by sight (2 Cor. 5:7).
Ask that members of your church family will have the humility and gentleness to consider others better than themselves. Pray that believers will not only look out for their own interests, but also for the interests of others (Phil. 2:3-4).
