“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak” (Matthew 26:41).
The greatest adventure man can embark on is prayer. Prayer has the ability to take the deepest thoughts and feelings of man before the Creator. At the same time prayer brings the nature, character, and purposes of God into the heart of man. Prayer can chart and change the course of human history. It can calm the heart in the midst of a raging storm and refresh the weary saint in the battles of life.
Prayer opens the possibilities of all that heaven has to offer us. Yet this adventure into the life of prayer cannot be taken lightly. When we enter the life of prayer we walk on holy ground. We come into the presence of a living God.
Many have never entered into the life of prayer because they lack understanding of prayer’s true nature. Perhaps this is why the disciples slept while Jesus prayed. And perhaps this is why the church sleeps in this generation while the world slides further and further into immorality and rebellion against God.
Glorious God, what an incredible adventure prayer has been in my life! As You stretch me more and more to ask with greater faith and trust, I am awed by how You reveal more of Your goodness to me. May I never fall into sleepy unawareness of Your Presence but always be fully awake to all that You want to do in and through me.
Praise God for choosing you “before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight” (Eph. 1:4). Thank him for choosing the poor in the world’s eyes to be rich in faith (Jas. 2:5). Confess the times when you have felt apathetic toward God’s lordship. Commit yourself to living in his promises as revealed in the Word. Ask God to help you live a holy and blameless life.
Ask God to prosper the work of world missionaries which your church supports. Pray for them and their families by name.
“It is in private prayer that we most easily get in touch with our spiritual selves.”

Advent – Day 14
“Teach me your way, O LORD, and I will walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name” (Psalm 86:11).
Lord, prepare our hearts to be undivided so that we will fear Your name. Father, would You put a new spirit in us? Remove our hearts of stone and give us hearts of flesh. We will be Your people and You will be our God as we wait for the coming of the Christ Child. (See also: Ezekiel 11:18-20)
