Praying God’s Will

November 2013 pic“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).

There are many people who spend huge amounts of time in what can be called “priority paralysis.” They don’t know what “the will of God” is, and therefore they cannot pray the will into existence, nor can they do what they aren’t sure of. Some are looking for a mystical experience. Others are looking for a clear biblical principle, but find that two or three principles can lead in different directions.

“Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel” (Mark 16:15, KJV) is clear. So is “Honor your father and your mother” (Exodus 20:12, NIV). What is not clear is which command predominates when we have to choose between the two! How are we to obey God’s calling to do both when our aging parents need our presence, and we are doing godly service in another country with positive results? Change the scenarios, but many a believer has been confused about which godly option is the right one—which job to choose, which area of service to take up, which course to follow, which fellowship of believers to join, etc. The best counsel I ever received on this matter was to do the general until God gives the specific. This means that we are to find out what is biblically commanded for the will; then we are to simply do and pray what we know from the Bible that pleases the Lord. Then in the midst of doing the things that we know please God generally, we give room for the Lord to direct us into the personal calling on our lives, whether a short-term assignment or a long-term career choice.

Father, I want to be in the very center of Your will each moment of my life.  Help me to stay grounded and focused upon Your Word, so that I will obey what it says.  Give me peace in knowing that You are in perfect control of every aspect of the moments I live.  May I be alert and watchful so that I will be ready to move when You direct.  My trust is in You, Lord.

Prayer Points

Praise God that he speaks in ways that even the lonely, anguished, and defeated can understand (2 Cor. 1:3-4). Give thanks that all things are possible in God (Mt. 19:26). Confess the many times you are tempted to work things out yourself, or are enmeshed in self-pity (Rom. 8:28). Commit to God all who are defeated and lonely. Ask God to help you remember that all you do is to be done in the name of Jesus, giving thanks and glory to him (Col. 3:17).

Pray that God will give your church a heart for reaching the nations of the world for Christ, through encouragement of missionaries, through giving, and through prayers.
