An important question is, “What is my passion?” Some may say, “I have a passion for worship.” Others say, “I have a passion for evangelism.”
When we have a passion for a spiritual discipline, it will erode our passion for God. Even though our initial thought was to exercise any of the spiritual disciplines in order to know God on a deeper level, that motive becomes corrupted if doing the spiritual discipline becomes more important than knowing God on a deeper level.
I once heard someone say, “I love to preach.”
My first thought was, I wonder if he loves God. This person’s statement provides an example of how any spiritual activity can be self-serving. A spiritual discipline can become an outward attempt to make us look spiritual when in actuality our spiritual root system is extremely shallow because we are not connecting with God and His heart while using these spiritual disciplines.

Father, forgive me for the times I have been passionate about a spiritual practice rather than about You! Help me to put all of my pursuits into proper perspective so that the depth of my love for You is not compromised by something I “do” but is instead expressed by Jesus Christ being formed in me.
Praise God for his heart that is open, warm, loving, and kind toward all he has made. Thank God for reaching down to draw you to himself through his Son (Jn. 3:16). Confess the times when your heart has been unwilling to give to others the same out-reaching love that you have received from God. Commit yourself to learning the kind, patient love of God (1 Cor.13:4). Ask him to fill you with a knowledge of the depth and breadth of his love (Eph. 3:14-19).
Intercede for the specific caring ministries that your church or denomination is involved in worldwide, asking that broken lives and poverty-stricken families may be helped.
