Life-Giving Water

Face To The FloorWater will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert. The burning sand will become a pool, the thirsty ground bubbling springs. In the haunts where jackals once lay, grass and reeds and papyrus will grow. Isaiah 35:6b-7

In every society, in every land, and in every age, rain is important. We depend upon it as a key source of life. Without rain our crops die, gardens wither, grass turns brown, and our water supplies begin to dry up. We must have rain to have life. There are spiritual droughts as well. They come upon individuals, churches and nations. They come as seasons of spiritual dryness when apathy, inactivity, and sin characterize our lives.

When revival comes, the rain comes. The Bible compares the Holy Spirit to a river or a fountain of life-giving water.  Isaiah gives us a picture of the Spirit of God bringing life to a dry and thirsty land. What a welcome picture for today’s Church that is so often lacking in the life-giving power of the Holy Spirit.

Come Holy Spirit! Come in power upon Your people. We are a dry and thirsty land and need the rain of heaven. The people around us come to our churches to find living water, but so often find only dry cisterns. Your promise, Lord Jesus, is that the thirsty may come to You and drink. You even said that streams of living water would flow from us because of our belief in You. We believe You more than we believe the dryness around us as we look forward to the water gushing forth in the wilderness and to streams in the desert.

Prayer Points

Praise your covenant God for his abiding faithfulness (Deut. 7:9). Give thanks that even “if we are faithless, he will remain faithful” (2 Tim. 2:13). Confess any unfaithfulness you’ve allowed into your relationships with God and others. Commit yourself to bearing the fruit of faithfulness through the power of the Holy Spirit (Gal. 5:22). Ask God to help you be a faithful follower of Jesus Christ.

Pray that God’s covenant love would extend through your generation and on to generations yet to come.
