“Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
One of the main struggles we face when we pray is, as Proverbs 3:5 describes, “leaning not on our own understanding.” This is key to an effective prayer life. Our tendency is to try to figure things out ourselves and then, on the basis of that understanding, to take whatever steps we think we need to take. What we’re saying when we do this is “I am more able than God is to take care of this situation. I don’t need him!” There’s no way we can think we are better able to control our lives and at the same time really believe God is who he says he is. “I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?” (Jeremiah 32:27). Of course when things don’t work out, we often turn to him and “allow” or even beg him to intervene.
When we fully acknowledge who God is, we should have no choice but to trust in him and surrender whatever situation we’re praying for into his sovereign hands!

Father, I spend so much time leaning on my own understanding rather than being completely dependent upon all that You are! Forgive me for my arrogance in thinking that I can do anything worthwhile in my own strength! Please help me to learn how to lay my life down before You and to obediently submit to Your control over it! You are the Sovereign Lord! Your ways are higher than my ways. I surrender my life, my work, my family, and all that I am into Your hands!
Pray for God’s Presence to be so evident to you today that you do nothing apart from Him!
Ask God to give you an overwhelming desire to respond to the needs of those around you today. Pray for those He puts in your path, and ask Him to show you how to be the answer to the prayers you pray!
