What Might Prayer for the Nations Cost You?

God entrusts His children with His plan to reach the nations of the world. In Psalm 2:7, 8 God gives us a powerful invitation and promise. Speaking to His Son, God invites Him: “Ask of Me, and I will give You the nations for Your inheritance, and the ends of the earth for Your possession.” He precedes this invitation by declaring, “You are My Son; today I have begotten You.” My heart then goes to Romans 8:16, 17. Paul asserts: “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together” (emphasis added).

On the strength of these verses I have the freedom to search the Scriptures to notice what God has granted to His Son. This includes Psalm 2:7, 8. The Spirit then bears witness with my spirit, that as a child of God, I too, am invited to “ask of God” concerning the nations of the world that He places on my heart, in order to accomplish His purposes for them. I need to be aware that asking this of God may be costly for me, just as it was for Jesus. It may well require my suffering with Him in the process of seeing a nation turn to God.

–Adapted from Chapter 61 of Giving Ourselves to Prayer (The Bible and Global Prayer by Henry Blackaby).

Holy Spirit, You testify to my spirit that I am a child of God, and an heir with Jesus Christ. Even if this relationship demands my suffering or my death, I will be glorified with Jesus! Help me to renew my resolve to follow Christ, no matter what the consequences might be, and to accept God’s invitation to ask Him to give Jesus His inheritance – the nations of the earth!

Prayer Points
Praise your all-powerful God for conquering sin and death. Thank him for new life in Christ and for saving you from the torment of sin and the agony of eternal death. Confess to God any apathy toward his powerful love in your life. Ask him to develop moment-by-moment awareness of his love for you and a passion to share this love with unbelievers. Commit to praying regularly for unsaved friends, family members, and neighbors. Ask that God will use you to reflect his love, his life, his lordship.

Pray that those who strive for earthly power will come face-to-face with its futility and surrender all to Jesus.
