I have posted watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night. You who call on the Lord, give yourselves no rest . . . till he establishes Jerusalem and makes her the praise of the earth. —Isaiah 62:6–7
I looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap on behalf of the land so I would not have to destroy it, but I found none. So I will pour out my wrath on them and consume them with my fiery anger, bringing down on their own heads all they have done, declares the Sovereign Lord. —Ezekiel 22:30–31
So he said he would destroy them—had not Moses, his chosen one, stood in the breach before him to keep his wrath from destroying them. —Psalm 106:23
Intercessors are important to God. He seeks intercessors. In fact, He counts on them. S. D. Gordon, in his classic Quiet Talks on Prayer, said: “The great people of the earth today are the people who pray. I do not mean those who talk about prayer; nor those who say they believe in prayer; nor yet those who can explain about prayer; but I mean those people who take time and pray. . . . They are the people that put prayer first, and group other items in life’s schedule around and after prayer. . . . These are the people who are doing the most for God; in winning souls; in solving problems; in awakening churches; . . . in keeping the old earth sweet awhile longer.”

Father, you desire for me to take my watch on the wall and I have often had “better” things to do. Forgive me, Lord, and renew my passion to seek Your face. May this new year give me a fresh resolve to stand in the gap on behalf of lost people all over the world and to be the person of prayer You have created me to be!
Praise God for his creativity. Give glory for the unending variety exhibited in his creation. Thank God for the wonderful way you have been made and for your unique personality, gifts, and talents. Confess any dissatisfaction you have had with the way you have been created. Commit yourself to serving God with your gifts and talents. Ask that God may reveal your spiritual gifts to you and give you opportunity to use them for him.
Pray that the gospel may reach, touch, and renew the hearts and minds of people without hope in our world today so that there may be a great harvest of souls brought into the church.
