Prototype for Prayer

Jesus’ prayer in John 17 is introduced with the words: “After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed.”  After Jesus said what?  The closing verses of John 16 tell us that Jesus had just warned his disciples that they would have trouble in this world.  Then he turned from talking to them and immediately began talking to the Father.  This means that, when Jesus began to pray, these guys were looking on.  He modeled for them how praying is done.

You might recall that the only time – ever – Jesus’ disciples asked him to teach them something was the occasion when they expressed an interest in learning to pray (Luke 11:1).  What had stimulated this curiosity on their part?  They had just observed Jesus praying.  They wanted to be able to do what they had just seen Jesus doing.

When Jesus prayed, his intercession served as a prototype, a model, for his disciples to follow.  This is a lesson that parents can pick up from John 17.  We not only need to pray for our children, we need to pray with them.  This is how they will learn to pray.  What have they gained, thus far, from watching and listening to us talk with God?

Lord Jesus, You are an awesome teacher.  Keep me continually curious to learn more about prayer from Your gracious heart.  Just as the disciples asked You to teach them to pray, I am making the same request two thousand years later!  Teach me, Lord, so that I might faithfully pray the desires of Your heart for my children, and others in my life.

Prayer Points
Praise Jesus for the depth of his redeeming love, which sent him to the cross for you (Gal. 2:20). Thank him for dying on your behalf. Confess any lack of love you feel toward a brother or sister. Commit yourself to remaining in Jesus’ love by keeping his commandments (Jn. 15:10). Ask God to show his love to you in new ways today.

Ask that the redeeming love of God will come gently to an unsaved person you know. Ask God to reveal a glimpse of his unconditional love through you.
