“From that time on Jesus began to preach, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near’” (Matthew 4:17).
The writer of Hebrews contrasts the revelation of heaven with the giving of the Law on Mt. Sinai, and describes heaven: “But you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly, to the church of the firstborn, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God, the judge of all men, to the spirits of righteous men made perfect, to Jesus the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel” (Hebrews 12:22).
Heaven or “the kingdom of heaven” is mentioned in sixty-one different verses in the twenty-eight chapters of the Gospel of Matthew alone. It is hard not to notice that Jesus was oriented to His home country, the realm from which He came. He was utterly conscious of heaven’s realities, despite being surrounded by all that was and is part and parcel of the material realm.

Jesus was “heavenly minded”—and much earthly good. He is our model. We are to think of God’s abode in heaven—to reflect on His marvelous presence in that perfect place—even as we praise Him first. To hallow the name of the Father is to recognize that He lives in hallowed space! Let’s think on heaven.
Heavenly Father, continually remind me that the blood of Jesus speaks words of forgiveness and reconciliation. Keep me conscious of my heavenly citizenship which is so much more blessed and fulfilling than anything this world will ever have to offer me.

Read Ps. 86:15-17 and praise God for his marvelous compassion, grace, love, and faithfulness to you. Thank him for turning to you and having mercy on you. Confess any lack of appreciation for God’s saving work in your life. Commit yourself to loving God wholeheartedly in response to his love for you. Ask God to give you a sign of his goodness.
Ask that people in your neighborhood who do not yet know Jesus will be drawn to him by observing your Christlike behavior. Pray that they will have the boldness to ask about the faith they see in you.
