Glory Prayers

“After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: ‘Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him’” (John 17:1-2).

Jesus did everything for God’s glory— and He gave it to us.

It only takes a little reading to make certain that it was so, but it was. Jesus did everything so that God could receive “glory.” The way the New Testament uses the word “glory” is utterly consistent from author to author. When it is used to describe human activity it always refers to “reputation,” “power,” and “renown.” Beyond these meanings, when it is used of God and God’s glory, it has a fluid interchangeability—referring to “divine honor,” “divine splendor,” “divine power,” and “visible divine radiance.” All of these meanings and more appear in John’s gospel—the place in which Jesus prays another “Lord’s Prayer”—prayer having to do with God’s glory, Jesus’ glory, and the giving of that glory to the disciples and through them to all humanity. It is the high priestly prayer of John 17.

This prayer is packed with depth and power. It cannot be understood in a quick reading. However, one of the principle themes of the gospel comes to light here in this passage—that somehow, some way, God and Jesus are “one”—and this is glorifying. All of the meanings of reputation, light, joy, and radiance come together in the “glory” prayers that our Lord prays in John 17, revolving around the unity of the Father and the Son, and the magnificent calling that all believers enter into God’s glory—through a profound unity that is identical to the Father’s and the Son’s.

Glorious Lord, I am astonished at Your desire to allow me to enter into Your glory! I feel so unworthy of Your love for me, and for Your incredible grace! May my life bring honor to You each moment as I breathe, speak, act, worship, work and live out my life as an offering to You alone!

Prayer Points

Praise Jesus as the one who “rose again from the dead” and “ascended to heaven” where he is “seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty.” Thank God for access to him through Jesus the Intercessor. Confess any skepticism of God’s willingness to hear your prayers. Commit yourself to living under the flag of King Jesus today. Ask the ascended King to rule over even the details of your life.

Pray that the children in your circle of close contacts will know that they belong to the King of heaven and earth. Ask God to help you model the dignity of living for Jesus.
