A Renewed Challenge to Pray for America: Let Freedom Reign

“Act as free men, and do not use your freedom as a covering for evil, but use it as bondslaves of God” (1 Peter 2:16).

How can we pray in order to see God’s glory dwell in our land?

Pray for freedom.

It’s really that simple. The word that thrilled our founding fathers and prompted sacrifices from them and many other generations down through history was freedom to seek God . . . or even the freedom to not seek Him.

In so many ways, the great crisis of our nation is the loss of freedom. The Pilgrims who first came to this country braved great difficulties because the government of England was not allowing them to worship as they believed was right. If Pilgrims were living today, they would be appalled at how that freedom has been eroded through the years.

It is not just religious liberty we are speaking of, though that is the one that strikes most closely to home as we consider our need for revival. Other examples include unfair taxation, regulations in every area of life, and, especially dangerous, the stifling of free speech through an increasing pressure to conform to “politically correct” forms of thought and speech. In the name of “tolerance,” an intolerant culture is taking away our hard-earned freedoms.

A rebirth of freedom in our land opens the door for the Church to cry out to God for His glory to come. Yes, that most certainly can still happen in the midst of oppression, but I believe the blessings of God can impact an entire nation that allows for the freedom to seek the Lord. One of the most important prayers you can pray is for a restoration of freedom and that God’s people use our freedom wisely and well.

Lord, You have created us to live under the freedom of Your grace. We have been freed from the law of sin and death. We have been gifted with life in a “free” nation. Yet we are in danger of losing our basic freedoms as a nation because “tolerance” and political correctness are seen as more important. Please give us courage in the face of those who would take away our rights to live for Jesus Christ, which include our right to speak freely when we see God dishonored, distorted, mocked or ignored by our government officials and others. Help us to demonstrate the love of Jesus to all around us, and to pray for those who don’t embrace Him. May Your people impact the culture in our nation in positive, loving ways so that others will be attracted to Jesus instead of repelled by His followers. Revive Your Church Lord…begin by reviving me!

Prayer Points

Rejoice with the prophet Isaiah, who wrote, “I delight greatly in the LORD; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness” (Isa. 61:10). Thank God for producing such joy in your life. Confess any lack of Christian joy. Commit yourself to bearing the fruit of joy through the power of the Holy Spirit (Gal. 5:22). Ask God to fill you with an inexpressible and glorious joy (1 Pet. 1:8).

Pray for your own expression of joy in the Lord. Do unbelievers recognize it in you? Do they know the source of your joy? Ask God to make your joy genuinely contagious.
