A Renewed Challenge to Pray for America: Seeking the Glory of God

“Then all of you can join together with one voice, giving praise and glory to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 15:6).

To help us focus our prayers on the purposes of God for our nation, we will need to understand what it means for God’s glory to dwell in our land. Maybe the first part of that is what it doesn’t mean. It doesn’t mean a perfect nation. It doesn’t mean a nation where everyone is Christian. It doesn’t even mean a nation where every law is somehow based on the Bible. The only theocracy that God ever endorsed was in Israel almost 3,000 years ago.

Perhaps the best way to describe the glory of God dwelling in a nation is from the history of our own country. During at least three distinct periods, often known as the Great Awakenings, the glory (Presence) of God dwelt in our nation. The stories from those days are compelling and tantalizing for us today. But we must also understand that there were many during these times that did not participate or even desire what was happening in revival.

As a matter of fact, during the Third Great Awakening, which began in September of 1857, the nation split right down the middle and the revival continued, in spite of the great suffering and trial of the Civil War. God’s Presence does not guarantee that everything goes smoothly. It could be argued that the Church was born on Pentecost in the midst of revival and difficult opposition and persecution. What we are seeking is the glory of God, not our own personal comfort.

Father, forgive us for being more focused upon ourselves, our fears and concerns over our nation and our security and safety than we are upon Your glory! Deepen our desire for Your plans and purposes to be accomplished in our land! We seek You with repentant hearts and renewed passion through the power of the Holy Spirit to see another great awakening in this nation!

Prayer Points

Praise God for his everlasting love (Jer. 31:3), which has no end. Thank God for demonstrating his love for you by sending his Son to die in your place (Rom. 5:8). Confess any lack of love you have experienced toward God or other believers. Commit yourself to bearing the fruit of love by the power of the Holy Spirit (Gal. 5:22). Ask God to enable you daily to “put on love” (Col. 3:14).

As you gather with other believers for worship this week, pray that “being rooted and established in love . . . [you may] grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ” (Eph. 3:17-18). Let this thought flood your mind in worship.
