Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? (Psalm 139:7)
The omnipresence of God is an attribute of God that is foundational for the man or woman of prayer. God is everywhere. He is on His throne in heaven and yet near to man on earth. There is no place in the universe where God does not dwell.
Canon W.G.H. Holmes of India said that he once saw Hindu worshipers tapping on trees and stones and whispering, “Are you there? Are you there?” They were seeking to find a god dwelling in one of those places. The follower of Jesus, however, does not need to search for the dwelling place of God. He can climb the highest mountain and meet God. He can go to the deepest ocean and encounter God. No place on earth or in heaven exists without the presence of God. This truth broadens the prayer life to the most unusual places. That is why the apostle Paul could encounter the living God in a Philippian jail cell two thousand years ago. That is why today’s disciples can meet God at any place, in any country, on any continent. God is there.
The omnipresence of God not only gives the man or woman of prayer access to God in any place, but it also gives him or her the ability to pray for people everywhere. This attribute of God is the foundational characteristic that opens the door for intercessory prayer. One of the greatest problems of prayer in this generation is limited vision among God’s people. Too many people pray in the context of their own little world. They become entrapped by tunnel vision. Because God is everywhere His concerns are global. As we focus on the omnipresence of God, our prayer concerns will broaden to every corner of the earth.
O Lord, You have searched me and You know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; You perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; You are familiar with all my ways” (Psalm 139:1-3). How grateful I am that there is nowhere I can go apart from Your presence and that You have given me the wonderful privilege of intercessory prayer. I am able to bring before You any person or situation anywhere in the world and You are listening and promise to answer. Give me Your heart for the nations, Father! Expand my vision so that I can see needs through Your eyes and respond with heartfelt prayer! Then, use me to be the answer to my own prayers in whatever ways You desire!
Magnify God as the one whose Word will outlive this world (Isa. 40:8). Thank Jesus that he is coming again to establish a new heavens and earth, at an hour that the Father has set (Mt. 24:30-31, 36). Confess those times when you let this perspective slip out of your daily life and prayers. Commit yourself daily to setting your hope and expectation on Jesus’ coming again. Ask God to show you what you must do in the time that you have left (24:45-51).
Pray for the homes you know that are nominally Christian, that God would set their hearts on fire and may show them the urgency of his kingdom work.
