Devotions for Every Day Life

A Principle of Intimacy

Just as purpose dictates priorities in life, priorities always produce a plan to fulfill our purpose. Jesus gave His disciples a plan through which they could love God and become an expression of His love to their fellowmen. The method of Jesus for discipleship was to teach men and women to pray. Prayer would usher them into a living, intimate relationship with the Father.

Jesus taught His disciples the principle of intimacy in prayer. He said, “When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners, so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you” (Matthew 6:5–6).

Lord God, so often I don’t take time to think about who I’m talking to when I pray.  I spout religious babble and fluff rather than considering the fact that prayer allows me to dwell in Your throne room!  Help me to live a prayer-filled life that brings You pleasure and reflects Jesus to everyone around me.  Show me how to disciple others in prayer so that Your kingdom is glorified!

Prayer Points

Give praise to the one who said, “I am . . . the truth” (Jn. 14:6). Thank God for rescuing you from the darkness of Satan’s deceit and placing you in the kingdom of his marvelous light (1 Pet. 2:9). Repent of those times that you have been uncomfortable with the light of God’s truth and have preferred twisting the truth to suit your purposes. Commit yourself to walking in the light of God’s truth with your whole heart. Ask God to make you willing to do that, no matter the cost to your pride or reputation.

Ask God to use your example of honesty and truthfulness this week to move someone’s heart to see the reality of God.
