Devotions for Every Day Life

God Dependence

“The mind of man plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps” (Proverbs 16:9).

George Müller resolved to arise each morning early to read and meditate upon his daily Bible passage several hours before the rest of the household stirred. His priority of Bible reading and prayer gave him both an orientation toward God’s voice throughout the day and the serenity of heart that allowed him to remain attentive in the face of obstacles.

This habit of resting upon God’s character took the particular form of waiting upon God’s answers and timing, both infinitely better than anything he could devise. He said three years before his death, “I never remember, in all [of] my Christian course . . . that I ever sincerely and patiently sought to know the will of God by the teaching of the Holy Ghost through the instrumentality of the Word of God, but [that] I have always been directed rightly. But if honesty of heart and uprightness before God were lacking or if I did not patiently wait upon God for instruction, or if I preferred the counsel of my fellow men to the declarations of the Word of the living God, I made great mistakes.”

George Müller learned to trust that God, through His Word and prayer, would direct his steps.

Gracious God, so often I am in too big of a hurry to wait upon You.  My agenda, to do list, appointments, plans, etc. are all competing for my time and attention. Help me to develop the daily discipline of digging into Your Word, and conversing with You before any other activity or thought crowds out what is most essential.  May I face every obstacle with You rather than attempting to depend upon other people or my own resources.  Give me a deep desire to make Your heart my dwelling place.

Prayer Points

Glorify God as the beginning and end of all things, the Alpha and the Omega. Give thanks for his love for you—a love that has kept you in mind since the beginning of the world and will continue to hold you when this world has passed away. Confess those times when you have seen yourself and your needs as the beginning and end of your existence. Commit yourself to giving God the highest place in your life and heart. Ask God to reveal his glory to you so that you cannot help but praise him with your whole heart.

Pray that worship services all over the world will glorify the name and power of Jesus rather than promote lesser things.
