Devotions for Every Day Life

The Will of Him Who Sent Me

Easter crossesA. W. Tozer calls us to search our hearts and our motives: “It is only when we introduce our own will into our relation to God that we get into trouble. When we weave into the pattern of our lives threads of our own selfish desires we instantly become subject to hindrances from the outside. If I mingle some pet religious enterprise of mine with the will of God and come to think of them as one, I can be hindered in my religious life.”

Jesus is our model in prayer. He made a remarkable statement that provides insight into the reason for His powerful prayer life. He said, “I can do nothing on My own initiative. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is just, because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me” (John 5:30). Jesus never worked a miracle in His own power or performed a ministry out of His own desire. He only did the will of the Father. He understood the art of objective listening, so that when the Father spoke, He acted.

Lord Jesus, Your power came from the Father as You waited in His presence. You were never in a hurry and always obeyed. Teach me to live such a life of intimate awareness that every word and action is directed by God. May my life clearly reflect Your image as I wait upon His heart. May You be glorified in me through the power of Your Holy Spirit.

Prayer Points

Praise God for being perfectly just in all his works. Thank him for loving righteousness and justice (Ps. 33:5). Confess any ungodly bias you harbor toward any people. Commit yourself to viewing others with a loving, Christlike attitude. Ask God to help you value justice more highly in all relationships of life.

Pray for the uprooting of governments which oppress their citizens and withhold justice from them. Ask that justice will “roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream” (Amos 5:24) in countries held in the grip of lawlessness.
