Receiving Cleansing

First John 1:9 says to confess and receive forgiveness. Forgiveness and cleansing is not the same thing. Forgiveness comes immediately as honest, wholehearted confession of sin is made to God. Cleansing comes only as you reclaim ground you surrendered to Satan when you sinned. To reclaim the ground and experience the cleansing of God, you have to surrender that area back to God afresh and anew.

“If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). The point is God does not forgive sin in a void. We must change our direction. We must leave the darkness and come to the light. That is repentance. Cleansing requires the repentance of sin. If you are not in fellowship with your Christian brother or sister, you have not repented and have not been cleansed. Repent, come to the light of Christ and confess your sin. Allow the blood of Jesus to cover and cleanse every stain. Then we can know true revival.

Faithful Father, just as in Samuel’s day, it seems as if Your word is rare. There is so much media-weakened gospel, but Lord, I long for a fresh word from You. Father, to lament means to feel or express sorrow or regret. Just as Israel lamented after You, teach me to mourn aloud, to lament after You (1 Samuel 7:2). And teach me what it means to return to You with all my heart.

Teach me what I must put away, what I must put off and put on. Father, show me how to prepare my heart for You (v. 3).

Oh Father, send revival. Stir honest confession in my soul. Teach me to deny myself, so I can spend time seeking You in prayer. Teach me to fast, not only from food but from time robbers, such as television and the Internet. Intensify my desperation for You. Oh God, I miss You. I am the one who has moved away. Restore me, Lord. Show me my sin. I confess my sin; I confess my indifference to You. Show me how to return to You with all my heart. Show me the things of the world that I have embraced that are sin (v. 6).

Lord, let me not be afraid of the world as Israel was, but let me be wise, discerning, and cautious of the world (v. 7). Let me know the great need I have to be open and honest with others, to ask others to pray for me. It is pride when I fail to do this. Forgive me (v. 8).

Father, as Samuel offered a sacrifice and cried out to You, let me truly understand Jesus Christ was the Lamb sacrificed, and by His blood I have access to You (v. 9). Teach me what it is to sacrifice unto You. Lord, move mightily on behalf of Your people. Answer me as I sacrifice to You (v. 10).

Father, I pray You will consume those who oppose You, just as You did the Philistines in Samuel’s day. Teach me to acknowledge Your mighty acts. Let me set up stones of remembrance, markers of Your help, deliverance, and Your great faithfulness (v. 12). May I recognize Your voice, Your promptings, and help me obey quickly. Show me anyone I need to go to and seek forgiveness or to make restitution. Father, hear my confession and restore me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
