“He [Jesus] said to the crowd: ‘When you see a cloud rising in the west, immediately you say, “It’s going to rain,” and it does. And when the south wind blows, you say, “It’s going to be hot,” and it is. Hypocrites! You know how to interpret the appearance of the earth and the sky. How is it that you don’t know how to interpret this present time’” (Luke 12:54–56)?
How do we understand the times in which we live? Jesus certainly seems to expect us to have the ability to correctly interpret the general moves of God within a generation. He criticized the religious leaders of His day who, having access to the prophetic Word, still did not understand the coming of the Messiah and all that entailed for them. If they missed it, we must assume that we also can fail to discern the times. It is very possible for Christians to get so caught up in everyday living that we never stop and look at the overarching plans and purposes of God for our day.

Holy Spirit, give me the wisdom to understand the times in which I live so that I may be a useful tool for Your purposes on this earth. May I not get too distracted by the things of this world to pay attention to what You are doing. Use me Lord, in these last days, to be salt and light to everyone around me.
Praise the one who is before all things, the one in whom all things hold together, the head of the church (Col. 1:17-18). Thank Christ for making peace between you and God by his blood shed on the cross. Confess those times when you have allowed something to come between you and another believer, weakening your unity in Christ. Commit yourself to seeking better understanding of that person’s position and feelings. Ask God to help you see the unity that exists between all followers of Christ.
Pray for unbelievers in the media. Ask that God may allow them to see such unity in the church that they will have to acknowledge the reality of Jesus Christ (Jn. 17:23).
