Knowing God’s will and liking it are not the same!
There are times when to know the will does not mean to relish what it will cost us. We know this from Jesus’ teaching: it is no easy thing to love our enemies—yet that is God’s will! Jesus had a thorough knowledge of the will of God based on His relationship with the Father. Though Jesus always embraced God’s will and did it, even our Lord didn’t always want to do what God wanted in the realm of His physical and emotional existence.
Now we come to holy ground. This, of all texts, is the clearest case of the will of our Lord and the will of the Father coming into some kind of agonizing tension (and here it is clear that embracing God’s will is not automatic or easy all the time).
Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.”
Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”
Holy Spirit, teach me to embrace God’s will, even when I don’t understand it completely. Give me a willing spirit to be an obedient servant, even when I know that to do so could cost more than I would humanly want to pay.

Praise Jesus for the depth of his redeeming love, which sent him to the cross for you (Gal. 2:20). Thank him for dying on your behalf. Confess any lack of love you feel toward a brother or sister. Commit yourself to remaining in Jesus’ love by keeping his commandments (Jn. 15:10). Ask God to show his love to you in new ways today.
Ask that the redeeming love of God will come gently to an unsaved person you know. Ask God to reveal a glimpse of his unconditional love through you.
