“Will you be angry with us forever? Will you prolong your anger through all generations? Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you? Show us your unfailing love, O LORD, and grant us your salvation” (Psalm 85:5-7).
Throughout church history the greatest revivals have typically followed periods of spiritual darkness. During those periods small groups of people desperately desired spiritual awakening. Prayer was viewed as a necessity and not an option.
We must realize the necessity of prayer as well. There must be an outpouring of men’s and women’s hearts to God before there will be an outpouring of God’s Spirit upon men and women. There must be a revival of praying before there can be a reaping of the harvest.
Two principles lead us to our first step toward revival. First, we must realize the desperateness of our situation. Much of the church today is backslidden. We have become subnormal in our Christian experience. We have developed a Christianity of convenience and comfort rather than character and commitment. We must recognize our need if there is to be hope for this generation.
Second, we must understand that our only hope is in God. We must thirst for communion with Jesus—a thirst that will drive us to action. We will then begin to obey God through the outpouring of our hearts to Him. Those attitudes expressed through prayer will release the power of God upon our lives, our churches, and our communities. We will see revival in this generation only as we begin to pray.
Father, wake us up to the truth of Your Presence in our midst so that we can see the desperateness of our situation. Remind us again that our only hope is in You alone! Turn our disobedient hearts and attitudes toward You in prayer so that we might see revival in this generation!
Praise “the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort” (2 Cor. 1:3). Thank God for coming to you with his compassion and comfort in your times of need. Confess insensitivity toward others who need you to be a channel of God’s compassion and comfort. Commit to an openhearted lifestyle. Ask God to love someone through you this week.
Pray for the unsaved to be warmed and opened by the compassion and comfort brought by God’s people. Ask that they be moved to accept God’s central compassion and comfort in the person of Christ Jesus.
